Thyroid
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck and is responsible for producing hormones that help regulate your metabolism, energy levels, heart rate, digestion, body temperature, weight, mood and more.
Your thyroid usually produces hormones that help keep your body running smoothly. However, problems can arise if it makes too much or too little of these important hormones. When the thyroid overproduces hormones, it’s called hyperthyroidism and when it produces too little, it’s known as hypothyroidism, each leading to different health challenges.
Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)
This is when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones to meet your body's needs.
Common symptoms include:
Persistent fatigue or low energy
Feeling cold easily
Constipation
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Dry skin and hair
Depression or low mood
Brain fog or memory issues
Thinning hair or brittle nails
Slow heart rate
Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
This occurs when the thyroid produces too much hormone, causing the body to run in overdrive.
Common symptoms include:
Restlessness or feeling “wired”
Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
Unexplained weight loss
Nervousness or irritability
Excessive sweating
Difficulty sleeping
Shaky hands or muscle weakness
Brittle hair and skin changes
Thyroid Testing & Functional Evaluation
The most accurate way to assess thyroid health is through a comprehensive blood panel that looks beyond just TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), including markers like free T3, free T4, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies. These tests help provide a clearer picture of how well your thyroid is functioning and whether factors like autoimmunity or poor hormone conversion may be playing a role.
At our clinic, we look at these results through a functional lens, asking not just “Is this within range?” but “Is this optimal for you?” We also take into account your symptoms, lifestyle and the bigger picture of what’s happening in your body.
Thyroid issues are rarely isolated, they’re often part of a wider pattern of imbalance involving the gut, nervous system, immune system and hormones. So if you’re struggling with low energy, weight changes, mood shifts or other symptoms that just don’t feel right, thyroid health could be the missing piece of the puzzle.
